What is a hair loss blood test?
With hair loss (alopecia) you lose an above-average amount of hair. There are different types of hair loss. You may losing a lot of hair at once, or whether it is a gradual process. Hair loss can be caused by various factors. Blood tests can be used to look at the underlying causes of hair loss. This can help find a treatment. What do we determine in the hair loss blood test?
Cortisol (stress hormone)
The other name for cortisol is also the stress hormone. It has been shown that stress can cause hair loss. Cortisol can influence the growth of hair follicles. This determination looks at the amount of cortisol in your body. These values vary during the day, the cortisol level is highest in the morning and lowest in the evening.Thyroid gland: TSH & fT4
Your thyroid gland can also have an effect on hair loss. An over- or under-active thyroid gland can cause hair loss. The TSH determination shows how much thyroid stimulating hormone is present in the blood. TSH controls the production of the thyroid hormones free T4 and T3. When the TSH value is higher or lower, the thyroid gland does not function normally and the thyroid gland is either underactive or overactive. With a normal TSH value it is often assumed that the other values are also good. Therefore, fT4 is normally only tested when the TSH is abnormal. At Labplusarts, both values are included in the research, because this provides a clearer insight.Vitamin B12
A consequence of a vitamin B12 deficiency may be that you suffer from hair loss. By means of this provision we can check whether this is the case.Ferritin
An iron deficiency can also cause hair loss. An iron deficiency occurs regularly and can be caused by, for example, blood loss or pregnancy. A blood test for iron can show whether this is the case. An iron deficiency can often be remedied through the right diet and / or supplements. The protein ferritin is what ensures the connection between iron and the red blood cells. If this is too low, it may indicate an iron deficiency.
