Fatigue - What is it?

Fatigue basic is a standard blood test that we have put together that is specifically aimed at identifying the most common reasons for fatigue In this package we look at your vitamin D, vitamin B12, thyroid hormone, glucose, iron, magnesium and finally we look at whether there is anemia by determining the hemoglobin.

The mechanism of fatigue can be found in the central nervous system in particular, but also in the transport of blood, the production of building materials for energy supply to cells and last but not least the functioning of muscles.

With blood tests for vitamins, minerals, hemoglobin, thyroid hormone and glucose you can ultimately successfully treat more than half of the people with fatigue.

Fatigue is caused by various factors, so every pathophysiology is different. The pathophysiology can be divided according to cause. With this blood test for fatigue we focus on the most common causes. Want to read more about the causes of fatigue? Read it in the blog.

What do we determine?

Blood: Hemoglobin & MCV

A blood test for fatigue is not complete without testing for anemia. Anemia mainly causes fatigue and feeling weak and lethargic. However, there are many different types of anemia. We make a distinction between macrocytic anemia, normocytic anemia and microcytic anemia by looking at the MCV. The MCV is a way to start looking for the cause. A blood test for anemia therefore always contains the Hb value and the MCV value. Since the normal values differ between men and women for anemia, the doctor will take this into account in the interpretation and advice.

Vitamin: Vitamin D and Vitamin B12

We determine the inactive form of vitamin D, we call this vitamin D3 or cholecalciferol or in molecular terms the 25-hydroxy vitamin D. It is important to keep the inactive form (25-hydroxy vitamin D) between 50 and 150 nmol / L. However, for people with persistent complaints it is advisable to maintain a higher minimum value. Vitamin B12 (cobalamin) is necessary for the production of red blood cells and the proper functioning of the nervous system. Vitamin B12 is almost exclusively found in animal products, so vegans are recommended to have a blood test done if they have symptoms. With a deficiency you will experience tingling, fatigue, dizziness, memory loss and muscle weakness. Want to read more about vitamin B12? Blood test vitamin B12 page

Trace element: Iron & Magnesium

Iron plays a role in the oxygen supply and removal by red blood cells through the production of hemoglobin. It also plays a role in the immune system. If you get tired quickly, get out of breath quickly and suffer from restless legs, you could well have an iron deficiency. Iron deficiency anemia is most common in women of childbearing age.

Magnesium plays an important role in alertness, muscle strength and heart rhythm. A magnesium deficiency is often secondary to a potassium or calcium deficiency. If you opt for mineral research, we will also test these. A magnesium deficiency is often caused by medications such as antibiotics, abdominal complaints such as diarrhea, kidney abnormalities and alcohol abuse.

Glucose

Glucose is the most important sugar for our body. The vast majority of carbohydrates are converted into glucose and ultimately converted into energy. If there are disturbances in glucose uptake, processing and / or breakdown, then something is not going well with the energy balance. An example of this is diabetes, in which sugar from the blood is not absorbed into the body. With diabetes, the body cannot use glucose. So there is a shortage of sugar and therefore a shortage of energy. A glucose deficiency can then cause fatigue because cells do not receive enough energy for their own tasks to keep other processes in the body going.

Thyroid hormone

During the thyroid hormone blood test we determine TSH and, if this is abnormal, the FT4. You can read a detailed description of the thyroid hormone on Thyroid hormone package 001 page

Fasting test?

You must be fasting for this blood test. The vitamin B12 determination can take longer than 24 hours.

When to test?

In case of complaints described here, it is recommended to take this test once. In case of negative results where the suspicion of a vitamin B12 deficiency in particular remains high, a follow-up test for another marker can be considered.
The accuracy of the test for Vermoeidheid Basis is conducted through ISO-certified laboratories. The accuracy of a test method is expressed in terms of specificity and sensitivity. However, the most important aspect is that the results are interpreted and accepted among general practitioners and hospitals. This is the case with our venous samples. Mutual acceptance may not always be present due to potentially reduced reliability with a capillary sample.
Most tests generally take 24-48 hours. Tests that go through an LC-MS method generally take longer, think about an average of 3-7 working days. Additionally, it also depends on the location. Some locations do the analysis themselves and others outsource it to another lab.
Interpreting the results of Vermoeidheid Basis is not always easy and should be seen in the broader picture, along with anamnesis and physical examination. In the doctor's advice section, the query in which you can already outline your complaints is taken into account, otherwise, the results are interpreted in conjunction with the other results. If necessary, the doctor can call to ask about physical abnormalities. You don't have to interpret the results yourself because there is always advice and explanation from the doctor.
If the results of the test for Vermoeidheid Basis are clinically significantly abnormal, the doctor will contact you by phone. If you are not reachable, you will receive an email. This includes advice and an explanation of the abnormal results and what you can do about them. If you need a prescription or referral, we can help with that.
The costs of Vermoeidheid Basis can be found on the product page. Depending on your insurance and additional packages, you may be reimbursed for these costs for Vermoeidheid Basis. For example, tests for IVF treatment are often reimbursed. After your order, you will receive an invoice that you can submit to your insurance.
The ordering process is easy. You can add a Vermoeidheid Basis test or the tests you want to your shopping cart. In step two, you fill in your details and pay. We are certified-ready according to the NEN 7510 and 7512 standards for secure data transfer in healthcare. The Portal is secured with two-factor authentication. Your data is also encrypted. We do not send the results of Vermoeidheid Basis to third parties without permission, not even to your general practitioner without your consent.
The blood test for Vermoeidheid Basis must take place at one of the collection locations we provide. At certain locations, it is possible for a phlebotomist to come to you. You can indicate this during checkout. An appointment will then be made as soon as possible to come to your home.
Yes, fasting is required for a Vermoeidheid Basis test
You can easily make an appointment for Vermoeidheid Basis blood test after your order in your Portal. You can visit almost daily in all major cities in the Netherlands. In smaller cities, you can visit on certain days. At certain locations, it is also possible to visit on weekends.
An interpretation by a doctor or an explanation is included in the Vermoeidheid Basis test. The explanation takes into account the query that you can specify in your Portal after ordering.
For blood tests, we always use venous sampling. This is the gold standard for blood collection. Over-the-counter tests, such as a finger prick test, use the capillary route for blood collection. These do not always give the same results and the accuracy depends on how, where, and with which technique the collection is done. The advantage, of course, is that the test is easier and less painful to take.
You can always pay with iDeal and credit card (VISA, Mastercard, and Amex). This also includes Apple Pay. The phlebotomists at the collection location cannot accept cash payments.
The results of Labplusarts can be shared with your general practitioner at your request. However, you can also easily arrange this yourself by downloading the result in PDF format. Because we use comparable test methods as the general practitioner, the results are interchangeable and comparable so that comparisons can be made well.
