This blood test measures the THC-COOH. THC is a product contained in Cannabis or weed and can be determined as a measure of how long ago someone started using cannabis or weed has smoked. THC is excreted quickly, within a few hours.
What is the difference between THC and THC-COOH?
THC is the psychoactive part of cannabis which makes you 'stoned'. In the liver, THC is converted into THC-COOH within a few hours. This is a metabolite and remains in the blood for longer, a few weeks or even months before it is completely broken down. The breakdown rate differs for everyone, because THC-COOH is stored in fat cells. The more weed you smoke, the longer it takes for all the THC-COOH to be broken down.
Can I request this Cannabis / THC test myself or does a psychiatrist do that?
You can also order this test yourself. However, this is often done by a psychiatrist in the context of a health declaration for the CBR done. The results will then be sent to your requesting psychiatrist. The THC-COOH blood test for the CBR is a new method. Previously, the determination was made in the urine, but the blood test is more accurate.
