What is lactose intolerance?
When you suffer from lactose intolerance, your body is unable to absorb the sugar (lactose) in the to digest milk. This is often due to a deficiency of the enzyme lactase in your small intestinal wall. If you produce too little of this enzyme and you are lactose intolerant, you can experience unpleasant complaints after consuming dairy. These are often complaints such as diarrhea , nausea, abdominal cramps, bloating and flatulence. There are different forms of lactose intolerance:
- Primary lactose intolerance: this form of lactose intolerance occurs when insufficient lactase is produced. Lactose occurs in small amounts in breast milk. Infants need lactase to digest breast milk. Primary lactose intolerance occurs when lactase production is reduced and your diet becomes less dependent on dairy. This is often the case when children reach the age of 2 and no longer need breast and / or bottle feeding. However, the symptoms may only become visible much later.
- Secondary lactose intolerance: this is caused by a problem in your intestinal wall. This may be due to, for example, an intestinal inflammation or infection, or after intestinal surgery. In this case, your intestinal wall no longer produces enough lactase.
- Congenital (congenital) lactose intolerance: this is a rare form of lactose intolerance and is a genetic abnormality. People with this form can produce little or no lactase from the start and therefore cannot tolerate breast milk.
What do we determine with the lactase genotyping test?
a lactase genotyping test, blood is taken. Your DNA is then examined. We test whether the code for the enzyme that breaks down lactose is missing or not. This enzyme is called lactase. If the code is missing, it is likely that you are missing the enzyme. This means you cannot break down lactose properly. This test is more reliable and easier to perform than the lactose tolerance test.
