Homocysteine blood test - What is it?
The test measures the amount of homocysteine in the blood. Homocysteine is normally present in all cells, but only in small amounts. In healthy cells, homocysteine is quickly converted into other products. Active folic acid is needed for this conversion. Vitamin B12 and other B vitamins are needed to keep folic acid in its active form.To To keep homocysteine low, folic acid, vitamin B12 and other B vitamins are necessary. These substances are absorbed through the diet (folic acid: mainly in green leafy vegetables and grain products; Vitamin B6: in vegetables and fruit; Vitamin B12 in meat, fish and poultry). .
In the absence of folic acid and / or vitamin B, the amount of homocysteine increases. Homocysteine can also be (highly) increased due to a hereditary defect, which affects an enzyme involved in the breakdown of homocysteine does not work properly.
