Pregnancy test in blood - What is it?
hCG is the pregnancy hormone. When you are pregnant, the trophoblast cells surrounding the embryo produce this hormone This allows maternal recognition of the pregnancy. The hCG hormone ensures, among other things, that the yellow body (corpus luteum) is maintained. This allows progesterone to be produced over time. Progesterone in turn ensures that the uterus develops properly and, as it were, enriches it with extra blood vessels so that it is comfortable for the fetus.By determining the hCG value you can also make an estimate determine how many weeks you are pregnant.
The usual pregnancy test is a urine test. These tests have different sensitivities, ranging from 20 to 100 units per liter. If your urine is dilute, you have a chance of an incorrect negative result. Or if you test too early, you can also get an incorrect negative result.
With a quantitative hCG determination from the blood you can measure much more sensitively whether you are pregnant. A blood test detects hCG from 5 units per liter, while the urine test detects hCG from 20. In addition, you can estimate how many weeks pregnant you are. The serological pregnancy test is also used to see whether pregnancy has progressed, for example during IVF treatments
