Fatigue - What is it?
Extensive fatigue is a comprehensive blood test that we have put together that is specifically aimed at the most common reasons for to investigate fatigue. In this package we look at your vitamin D, vitamin B12, thyroid hormone, ferritin, glucose and finally we check whether there is anemia by determining the hemoglobin. We also do a so-called complete blood count (Complete Blood Count) where we look at the hemoglobin, MCV, platelets and leukocytes. Finally, we look at whether there is an active (chronic) inflammation by measuring the erythrocyte sedimentation rate. The mechanism of fatigue can be You will find this in the central nervous system in particular, but also in the transport of blood, the production of building materials for energy supply to cells and last but not least the functioning of muscles.
With blood tests for vitamins, inflammation values, hemoglobin, thyroid hormone and glucose you can ultimately successfully treat more than half of the people with fatigue.
Fatigue is caused by several factors, so every pathophysiology is different. The pathophysiology can be divided according to cause. With this blood test for fatigue we focus on the most common causes. Want to read more about the causes of fatigue? Read it in the blog.
What do we determine?
Blood: CBC (Hemoglobin, MCV, platelets and leukocytes)
A blood test for fatigue is not complete without testing for anemia, or anemia. Anemia mainly causes fatigue and feeling weak and lethargic. However, there are many different types of anemia. We make a distinction between macrocytic anemia, normocytic anemia and microcytic anemia by looking at the MCV. The MCV is a way to start looking for the cause. A blood test for anemia therefore always contains the Hb value and the MCV value. Since the normal values differ between men and women for anemia, the doctor will take this into account in the interpretation and advice. During the extensive examination, we look at the platelets and white blood cells for completeness. Active inflammation can also contribute to fatigue and by looking at these values we can assess whether inflammation plays a role.Vitamin: Vitamin D and Vitamin B12
We determine the inactive form of vitamin D, we call this vitamin D3 or cholecalciferol or in molecular terms the 25-hydroxy vitamin D. It is important to keep the inactive form (25-hydroxy vitamin D) between 50 and 150 nmol / L. However, for people with persistent complaints it is advisable to maintain a higher minimum value. Want to read more about vitamin D? Blood test vitamin D pageVitamin B12 (cobalamin) is necessary for the production of red blood cells and proper functioning of the nervous system. Vitamin B12 is almost exclusively found in animal products, so if you do not eat meat, you are recommended to have a blood test done in case of complaints. With a deficiency you will experience one or more of the following complaints: tingling, fatigue, dizziness, memory loss and / or muscle weakness. Want to read more about vitamin B12? Sedimentation BSE
Check the sedimentation we how quickly the blood sinks. In active (chronic) inflammation, it has been shown that the sedimentation rate of the blood is higher due to a changed composition.Ferritin
Ferritin plays a role in the oxygen supply and removal by red blood cells through the production of hemoglobin. It also plays a role in the immune system. If you get tired quickly, get out of breath quickly and suffer from restless legs, you could well have an iron deficiency. Iron deficiency anemia is most common in women of childbearing age.Glucose
Glucose is the most important sugar for our body. The vast majority of carbohydrates are converted into glucose and ultimately converted into energy. If there are disturbances in glucose uptake, processing and / or breakdown, then something is not going well with the energy balance. An example of this is diabetes, in which sugar from the blood is not absorbed into the body. With diabetes, the body cannot use glucose. So there is a shortage of sugar and therefore a shortage of energy. A glucose deficiency can then cause fatigue because cells do not receive enough energy for their own tasks to keep other processes in the body going.Thyroid hormone
During the thyroid hormone blood test we determine TSH and, if there is a deviation from this, the fT4. You can read a detailed description of the thyroid hormone at Thyroid Hormone Blood Test BasicsFasting testing?
You must be fasting for this blood test. The thyroid and vitamin B12 determinations may take longer than 24 hours. How does it work?
