The results of the DHEAS test are usually known within a few working days.
What is DHEAS?DHEAS stands for dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate. This is a male sex hormone that can be found in men and women. This hormone plays an important role in the production of the male hormone testosterone and the female hormone estrogen. Moreover, DHEAS is an important component during puberty for the growth of male sexual characteristics.
DHEAS is mainly produced in the adrenal glands. This hormone helps regulate heart rate, blood pressure and other bodily functions. Smaller amounts of DHEAS are produced in the testicles of men and in the ovaries of women.
What do we determine during the DHEAS test? This test looks at the amount of DHEAS in the blood. If your DHEAS values are not normal, it may be that something is wrong with your adrenal glands. A DHEAS test is also used to diagnose problems with the testicles or ovaries, such as the diagnosis of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). In this case, other hormones, such as FSH and LH, are often also examined. Furthermore, an overproduction of DHEAS can indicate that there is adrenal gland tumors, cancer, or benign adrenal gland enlargements.
When a woman has higher levels of DHEAS, it can lead to symptoms such as excessive hair growth on both the body and face, a deeper voice, irregular periods, and acne.
When should you choose a DHEAS test? This test is recommended when:
- You want know whether your adrenal glands are functioning properly
- You want to investigate whether there are problems with your ovaries or testicles
- You want to investigate whether there is overproduction of DHEAS is
