What is it?

Cholesterol is an essential molecule in the body. It is responsible for the production and maintenance of the cell membrane layer and also plays a significant role in signaling cellular processes. Cholesterol is also a precursor for vitamin D and hormones.

Most cholesterol is produced in liver cells and must be transported through the blood to be effectively distributed throughout the body. This transport occurs with lipoproteins, such as LDL. LDL prepares cholesterol for use in a cell that needs it. When there is too much cholesterol, LDL is not absorbed and remains in the blood. This is harmful to your blood vessels.

What do we determine?

In the cholesterol blood test, we first determine your cholesterol levels. We also look at the 'bad' LDL cholesterol and the 'good' HDL cholesterol. Based on these data, we can calculate a cholesterol/HDL cholesterol ratio. The lower this value, the better.

We also measure the overall fats in your body, the so-called triglycerides. These are fats you ingest with your food. Triglycerides are converted into fatty acids in your intestines and then converted back into triglycerides in the liver. In various compositions, they are transported through the blood vessels in lipoproteins. This test gives you a good picture of the fats in your body and your risk of cardiovascular diseases.

When to test?

If you already have an increased risk of heart and vascular diseases, it is advised to test every 3-12 months. If you have additional diseases, such as overweight or diabetes, you can test every 3-6 months. If you are over 20 years old, it is advised to test once every 4 years if the results are good.
