What do we determine?
Urine / Swab: Chlamydia and Gonorrhea
Chlamydia is the most common STD among young people in the Netherlands. The presentation of complaints and complications differs between men and women. The blood tests also differ. For women you can take a vaginal swab, for men it is done via urine analysis. Chlamydia is a bacterium that can be detected with the PCR method. This is done in the laboratory.Symptoms for men: in 50% of cases without complaints, with complaints pain when urinating, especially in the morning. In addition, pain in the scrotum and watery / pus-like discharge.
Symptoms in women: 90% have no complaints. Complaints include pain or a burning sensation when urinating, discharge. Pain or blood loss during sexual contact and blood loss between menstruations. Pain in the lower abdomen also occurs. A feared complication can ultimately lead to infertility.
Gonorrhea is one of the most common STDs among young people in the Netherlands and almost always causes complaints in men. However, the presentation of complaints and complications are different in men and women. The (blood) test also differs. For women you can take a deep vaginal swab, for men it is done via the gonorrhea STD urine test in which the first ray is collected. So there is no blood test for this STD. In men you often see a yellow-green pustular discharge, called 'the drip'. Increased vaginal discharge is common in women.
Serology: HIV, Hepatitis B and Syphilis
Syphilis is also called lues. Syphilis is a bacterium whose course we divide into four stages; primary, secondary, latent and tertiary syphilis. In the primary stage you will see a painless wound on your genitals. In many people, the body fights against the bacteria, but some always remains behind. The syphilis infection can progress to the secondary stage within 6 – 12 weeks. The bacteria can reach all organs in the body, including the central nervous system, we then call it neurosyphilis. Neurosyphilis often occurs in the tertiary stage. This can weaken the body's entire defense system, making you more susceptible to other diseases. A latent phase can also occur, where the bacteria are present, but there are no complaints.HIV is a viral infection for which there is no practical cure yet. Once infected, it takes months for the first symptoms to appear. The virus causes the immune cells in the body to become non-functional. Without treatment, your immune system will no longer work and you will be susceptible to the smallest inflammations and infections. Over time, an untreated HIV infection can progress to AIDS. You can prevent this progression with medication (a pill cocktail). HIV is common among MSM (men who have sex with men) and drug users where it is spread through needles.
Hepatitis B is an STD that can occur among young people. It can be asymptomatic (without complaints) or cause unpleasant complications with eventual liver failure. It is therefore important to have yourself tested after unprotected sexual contact.
You can do this quickly, easily and anonymously at Labplusarts.
If the test is positive, you will subsequently be offered treatment options. So you don't have to go to the doctor again to tell them that you have an STD. Any referral will be created digitally for you after a free e-consultation.
