What is menopause?

Menopause is when a woman no longer has menstrual periods and can no longer become pregnant (naturally). Usually the periods are less frequent during menopause, but it can also stop suddenly. This process is a natural part of aging and mainly occurs in women between the ages of 45 and 55, when estrogen levels drop. There are various complaints during menopause, such as hot flashes, vaginal dryness, problems with sleeping, reduced libido and depression or anxiety complaints. The duration of these complaints varies.

What do we determine when the menopause blood test?

FSH & LH
FSH (follicle stimulating hormone) is an important factor for sexual development. For example, it regulates the menstrual cycle and helps with the growth of eggs. The FSH values change during the cycle. The values are highest during ovulation. In men, FSH ensures the production of sperm and the values do not change that much. The start of menopause can be demonstrated by FSH research. Elevated FSH levels can indicate that a woman is going through menopause.

The luteinizing hormone (LH) is closely linked to FSH. LH is also important for sexual development. LH levels are highest just before ovulation. At the onset of menopause, when no more eggs are maturing, LH will rise. This increase can be comparable to the LH value of a normal cycle. Therefore, this provision cannot be used alone to demonstrate the transition. An abnormal LH value can indicate other conditions, such as problems with the ovaries. On the other hand, FSH does rise sufficiently during menopause.

Oestradiol
Estradiol is a sex hormone and is part of the estrogens. This hormone is produced in the ovaries with the help of LH and FSH. After menopause, women produce estrogens in their fatty tissue. Estradiol levels are lower after menopause. With the help of these three hormones we can detect early menopause and determine the transition more accurately.

When to opt for a menopause blood test?

Why blood tests for (early) menopause?

If you suffer a lot from complaints such as irregular periods, hot flashes, vaginal dryness or sleeping problems, you may be going through menopause. While some women have almost no problems at all, other women have a lot of complaints. By researching your hormones, you can see whether a treatment is appropriate for these complaints. Based on this research, you will have a clear insight into menopause. .
The accuracy of the test for Menopauze is conducted through ISO-certified laboratories. The accuracy of a test method is expressed in terms of specificity and sensitivity. However, the most important aspect is that the results are interpreted and accepted among general practitioners and hospitals. This is the case with our venous samples. Mutual acceptance may not always be present due to potentially reduced reliability with a capillary sample.
Most tests generally take 24-48 hours. Tests that go through an LC-MS method generally take longer, think about an average of 3-7 working days. Additionally, it also depends on the location. Some locations do the analysis themselves and others outsource it to another lab.

For blood tests, we always use venous sampling. This is the gold standard for blood collection. Over-the-counter tests, such as a finger prick test, use the capillary route for blood collection. These do not always give the same results and the accuracy depends on how, where, and with which technique the collection is done. The advantage, of course, is that the test is easier and less painful to take.
You can always pay with iDeal and credit card (VISA, Mastercard, and Amex). This also includes Apple Pay. The phlebotomists at the collection location cannot accept cash payments.
The results of Labplusarts can be shared with your general practitioner at your request. However, you can also easily arrange this yourself by downloading the result in PDF format. Because we use comparable test methods as the general practitioner, the results are interchangeable and comparable so that comparisons can be made well.
