Homocysteine blood test - What is it?

The test measures the amount of homocysteine in the blood. Homocysteine is normally present in all cells, but only in small amounts. In healthy cells, homocysteine is quickly converted into other products. Active folic acid is needed for this conversion. Vitamin B12 and other B vitamins are needed to keep folic acid in its active form.

When to choose this test?

- The test is requested if a deficiency of folic acid or vitamin B12 is suspected. This is sometimes the case with anemia.
