What is estradiol?

Estradiol is a hormone and is part of the group of estrogens. This hormone is mainly produced in the ovaries. Estradiol stimulates growth and development of female sexual characteristics. Estradiol also helps with fat distribution throughout the female body. Estradiol also plays an important role in the health of bones and joints.

Men also have estradiol in their body. However, these amounts are lower and of less importance for their development compared to women.

What do we determine during an estradiol blood test?

This test measures the amount of estradiol in the blood. The amount of estradiol can be tested when, for example, there is infertility, an irregular cycle or with symptoms of menopause. Estradiol can also show early or delayed puberty and show how well the ovaries are working.

Testing for estradiol alone is often not sufficient to make a diagnosis. However, the results of this study can help decide whether further research is necessary.

When to opt for an estradiol test?

It is recommended to opt for an estradiol blood test when:

  • You suffer from (many) menopausal symptoms and / or seem to be entering an early menopause
  • You want to have a hormone test performed


Why have your estradiol tested?

This blood test for estradiol is a good starting point for a hormone test. Based on the results, the doctor can advise whether further tests are necessary.

The accuracy of the test for Oestradiol is conducted through ISO-certified laboratories. The accuracy of a test method is expressed in terms of specificity and sensitivity. You can always pay with iDeal and credit card (VISA, Mastercard, and Amex). This also includes Apple Pay. The phlebotomists at the collection location cannot accept cash payments.
The results of Labplusarts can be shared with your general practitioner at your request. However, you can also easily arrange this yourself by downloading the result in PDF format. Because we use comparable test methods as the general practitioner, the results are interchangeable and comparable so that comparisons can be made well.
